A consultation can help distinguish the immediate administration questions from later distribution or transfer work. Discuss whether there is a will, whether an executor or administrator has already been appointed, whether overseas documents exist and whether any beneficiary disputes the position. The route and documents needed depend on the estate’s circumstances; the service list does not mean every estate requires the same application.

Prepare the death certificate, any will, available grants or court orders, and identification details for the people involved. Bring a list of known assets, liabilities and family relationships, supported by documents such as title particulars, account information and correspondence. If someone has already dealt with an asset or challenged a proposed distribution, explain what happened and provide the records available. Incomplete information can be identified at the first meeting.
